Buying tapware and showers from China

Tapware is the lightest, cheapest and most regulated line in a fit-out. The saving is large, and the only thing that matters is the certificate.

What to spec

  • Body material: lead free DZR brass, and the cartridge and aerator brands. The quote on the house we fitted out named Spanish cartridges and Swiss aerators.
  • Finish code, matched across every item, and a physical finish sample.
  • In-wall bodies and trims from the same maker and range.
  • Flow rates, so the WELS star rating is known before you buy.
  • Warranty in writing: on the house we fitted out, 7 years on most items and 15 years on mixer bodies.

What it costs landed

The factory on the house we fitted out held stock and quoted a 7 to 9 day lead time, so tapware can be ordered last and still ride in the same container.

Elje estimate, October 2026. Not yet from a delivered job; replaced with real landed numbers as jobs land.

ItemFactory gateLanded estimate
Basin mixer$82 USD (real quote)$140 to $180
Pull-out kitchen mixer$94 USD (real quote)$160 to $200
Concealed shower diverter$62 USD (real quote)$105 to $135
Comparable Australian brand mixer$200 to $450

What to check

  • WaterMark, in the factory's own name, on the register. Copied certificates are common.
  • Lead free: manufacture of non-lead-free products under existing WaterMark licences stopped on 1 May 2026. Existing certified stock can be installed until 1 May 2028, but buy lead free.
  • WELS registration for taps and showers.
  • Check the certificate covers the exact model and finish you are buying.

Mistakes we have seen

  • Buying from a factory whose certificate is for a different model.
  • Mixing two makers' in-wall and trim parts.
  • Ignoring spare cartridges. Ask for two per model in the container.

Questions

Why is tapware so much cheaper direct?

Much of the tapware sold in Australia is made in the same Chinese districts. Buying direct skips the importer, distributor and showroom margin.
